Adult bed bugs are approximately 5-7 millimeters long, about the size of an apple seed. Unfed bed bugs have a flat, oval shaped body. Bed bugs who have enjoyed a recent meal will be puffed up like a balloon and take on a red-brown color. Bed bugs have a sweet, musty smell due to odor producing glands underneath their bodies. Young bed bugs are see through, or a off-white color. They are very difficult to see due to size and color. Bed bugs eggs are white, and roughly the size of the head of a pin.
Finding physical signs of bed bugs is the most accurate way to tell you have a problem. Check bedding for small, brownish-reddish spots (which can be left when bed bugs are squashed) and for dark spots that are about the size of a dot from a felt tipped pen (bed bug excrement). Bed bug droppings may look like spots of mildew, as the edges may bleed into the fabric. Look at the seams of the fabric, and in the folds of material. In addition to beds, bed bugs may take up residence in sofas, drapes, carpeting, even behind photo frames on the wall.
Bed bug bites are not a reliable way to tell if you have an infestation. Bites from bed bugs can be mistaken for hives, a rash, or bites from other insects such as mosquitoes or mites. To further complicate matters, some people do not have a physical reaction to bed bug bites at all.
No one wants to have bugs in their homes, particularly ones that live in your bed or sofa waiting for you to relax so they can bite you. Left untreated, bed bugs can spread throughout your home and become increasingly difficult to eradicate. They may also travel on your clothing to make a new home in your car, office, or other homes you visit. Bed bugs infestations take time to treat. The longer you wait to treat the problem, the more bed bugs you will have, and the longer it will take to get rid of them all.
